Dr. Ida Rolf was the founder of Rolfing®, also known as Structural Integration. A biochemist by training, she earned her Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1920 before embarking on a lifelong search to better understand the relationship between structure, movement, and human potential.
During the 1930s, while seeking alternative approaches to health for members of her own family, Dr. Rolf explored osteopathy, chiropractic, yoga, and the Alexander Technique. Through years of study, observation, and hands-on practice, she developed the Structural Integration 10-Series—a systematic sequence of sessions designed to help organize the body's connective tissue (fascia) and support greater balance, ease, and alignment within gravity. During the 1960s and 1970s, Dr. Rolf taught at the Esalen Institute in California, where her work gained international recognition. She later founded the Rolf Institute in Boulder, Colorado, establishing a formal path for educating future practitioners. Today, her work continues to influence practitioners around the world. At Gravity Body Academy, we are honored to carry forward the principles she discovered, sharing them with each new generation of students who, in turn, bring this work into the lives of others. |

Emmett Hutchins was one of Dr. Ida Rolf's earliest students and went on to become one of the most respected teachers and practitioners of Structural Integration. Working closely with Dr. Rolf for many years, he developed a deep understanding of her work while helping to teach the next generation of practitioners through the Rolf Institute.
Known for his curiosity, thoughtful observation, and commitment to understanding the principles behind Structural Integration, Emmett encouraged students to look beyond memorizing techniques and instead learn to truly see the human body. His teaching inspired practitioners to continually observe, question, and grow throughout their careers. Later, Emmett founded The Guild for Structural Integration, where Gerald Clark completed his training and had the privilege of studying directly under his guidance. Emmett was known not only for his wisdom but also for his memorable encouragement. One of his favorite expressions was, "Get Big!"—a reminder to stand confidently, take up space, and fully embody who you are. Another quote often attributed to him is, "Change is inevitable. Growth is optional." Gerald often spoke with deep respect and gratitude for Emmett's mentorship and the profound influence it had on both his practice and his teaching. |

Gerald Clark was a lifelong student of human potential. After serving as a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army and later earning a master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, San Diego, his curiosity led him in an unexpected direction—the remarkable relationship between structure, movement, fascia, and human well-being.
While searching for alternative approaches to support his son, Gerald explored Structural Integration, yoga, breathwork, and other holistic disciplines. He was deeply inspired by the principles of Rolfing and went on to study at The Guild for Structural Integration under the guidance of Emmett Hutchins. Gerald's graduate thesis, "Structure is Function is Energy," reflected a philosophy that became central to both his practice and his teaching: when the body's structure is more organized, movement becomes more efficient, function improves, and energy can be expressed more freely. Over the years, Gerald built thriving practices in California and Arizona, helping hundreds of clients while continuing to refine his understanding of Structural Integration. In 2011, he began mentoring his first student, Christa Clark. What began as a teacher-student relationship grew into nearly a decade of shared study, clinical practice, and collaboration. Together they co-founded Gravity Body Academy, fulfilling Gerald's long-held dream of creating a school that would make this work more accessible to students around the world. Today, Gerald's legacy continues through every class taught, every practitioner trained, and every life touched by this work. At Gravity Body Academy, we are honored to carry forward his vision with the same spirit of curiosity, integrity, and generosity that defined his life. |

Christa Clark began her training in Structural Integration with Gerald Clark in 2011 as his first apprentice. What began as formal instruction developed into nearly a decade of shared study, hands-on practice, clinical work, and teaching. Through weekly exchanges, observation, and treating clients together, she developed a deep understanding of the principles that continue to guide Gravity Body Academy today.
Alongside her Structural Integration training, Christa pursued a broader exploration of movement, energy, and healing. She trained as a 500-hour yoga teacher in India and studied sound healing, bringing a holistic perspective that complements her understanding of fascia, movement, and the interconnected nature of the human body. In 2018, Gerald and Christa co-founded Gravity Body Academy with the shared vision of making Structural Integration more accessible to students around the world. Together they developed both the online curriculum and the immersive hands-on training program. Following Gerald's passing in 2020, Christa continued the work they began together, preserving the curriculum while guiding the academy into its next chapter. Today she maintains an active Structural Integration practice in Oaxaca, Mexico, and continues to teach the annual Gravity Body Academy Hands-On Training, carrying forward a lineage that began with Dr. Ida Rolf and has been enriched through each generation of teachers. |
